7 Tips on How to Get Motivated When You’re Depressed

Press Release

At some point in their lives, everyone feels depressed. Whether it’s from work stress, family troubles, or financial burdens, there are plenty of situations that can leave you feeling blue. Some even suffer from clinical depression, where they feel down even if something bad hasn’t happened.

How to Get Motivated

Regardless of the reason, there are steps you can take to help you still be productive despite feeling depressed. Here are 7 tips on how to get motivated when you’re depressed.

Set the Bar Low

When it comes to depression and motivation, it’s important to aim low. You probably aren’t running at full emotional capacity, so start with small goals first.

Don’t Be Too Self-Critical

You are your own worst critic. The more you criticize yourself for being “lazy,” the more you’ll remain paralyzed. Give yourself some slack.

Ask for Help

When you are struggling with depression and motivation, don’t be afraid to ask for help. Having someone to hold you accountable and help you attend events can go a long way when it comes to taking that first step out the door.

Plan to Do It, Not Enjoy It

When people are depressed, it’s common to lose interest in activities that once brought enjoyment and fulfillment. One way to overcome this is to make a plan to do a “fun” or “active” activity and not worry so much about whether you’ll enjoy it or not.

Envision How You’ll Feel Afterward

Conversely, sometimes it’s more beneficial to envision how you might feel after you complete a particular task, rather than focus on the effort of doing.it. It can be very easy to focus too much on how much effort a task requires.

Arguably the most important tip on how to become motivated, exercise provides many health benefits. Aim to have some sort of physical exercise for 30 minutes to an hour three to five times a week.

Find a Mantra

Mantras are short, sweet, yet powerful statements that can be effective at taking your mind off of negative thoughts. Find a couple that work for you, and don’t mind if they sound cheesy or tacky.
