Mental Health FAQ's for Chicago Lakeshore Behavioral Hospital

Chicago Lakeshore Hospital provides an initial assessment and behavioral health treatment services to patients and loved ones seeking assistance with mental health concerns. We offer a variety of both inpatient and outpatient services to meet individual needs. Here are some frequently asked questions about our services and policies. Payment and Insurance Information

What insurance or forms of payment do you accept?

Medicare is accepted for adults. Medicaid/SASS for children and adolescents up to the age of 20 and Medicaid for adults 65 and older. We have agreements with all managed care and private insurance companies.

Will my hospital stay be covered by my insurance?

We have agreements with most of the managed care and private insurance companies. Feel free to ask your behavioral health counselor or the business office patient account representative about your specific insurance and whether it will cover your stay at our hospital. We accept Medicare for all adults. We take Medicaid for all children and adolescents up to the age of 20 and Medicaid for adults 65 and older. If you’re under the age of 20 you will have to be assessed by an independent agency called SASS. This might make your time in or intake department a little longer than normal.

Information about Admissions and Assessment

What is the admission process?

We are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. You are welcome to come in for a free assessment. Our trained intake department will facilitate the admission process including assessment and insurance verification. Uninsured patients are encouraged to speak to the business office to make financial arrangements.

How long will the assessment take?

Assessments take approximately 1 – 1.5 hours.

Do I need to make an appointment?

No. Patients are welcome 24 hours a day.

How will my treatment path be determined?

After the intake staff have had a chance to talk to you, the Behavioral Health Counselor and the Registered Nurse will consult with a Psychiatrist and talk about your situation and presenting problem. If the Psychiatrist and the staff members believe that you should be in the hospital and require immediate medical treatment, we will get approval for admission and we will identify a bed for you on the unit. However, if the psychiatrist and the staff do not feel that you meet the hospital’s criteria for admission – we will refer you to a different service such as outpatient mental health or a residential substance abuse program.

What if I don’t need to be hospitalized?

The assessment process is designed to determine the appropriate level of care a patient may need. Often times, it is recommended that patients seek outpatient services either at our facility or in the community. We will always offer referrals to match your needs before you leave our hospital.

Inpatient Information

How long is the average stay in the hospital?

Each patient has an individual treatment plan and treatment team. You and your team will determine your length of stay depending on how you are responding to treatment.

Are there visiting hours for family and friends?

Visiting hours are scheduled for each unit. Families and significant others are encouraged to participate during scheduled family therapy sessions. Please review our full visitation policies and guidelines.

Who will be a part of my treatment team?

Your treatment team will be comprised of a psychiatrist, therapist, nurse, and case manager. Together they will work on making sure that your time at CLSH is helpful and productive. You may also talk to staff from our outpatient program if your treatment team believes that you could benefit from further services with CLSH after discharge. On occasion, we refer a few patients to a research program with one of our partners. We may want to discuss with you, your willingness to participate in this research program, however both the discussion and your participation are completely voluntary.

What personal items should a patient bring upon admission?

Bring clothing appropriate for 3 days. Also bring personal items such as toiletries, including shampoo, toothbrush, toothpaste, etc. Bring a list of medications, dosages, and times. Do not bring valuable jewelry or cash other than an amount that will be needed for small purchases. Please review our guidelines and policies for what to pack for your stay.

What items should a patient NOT bring upon admission?

Please don’t bring recreational or illicit drugs and alcohol to the hospital as it is not allowed on CLSH property. Please leave your valuables at home, including jewelry and don’t bring in more than $10 in cash. Cameras are not allowed on the units, including those in cell phones and watches. Cellphones are also not allowed on the unit and will be placed in the safe until your discharge. Please review our guidelines and policies for what to pack for your stay.

Information About Substance Abuse Treatment

Do you use medication for detox?

Yes, each patient is attended by a psychiatrist who manages the detox and uses medication appropriately according to symptoms. Please refer to our information about medical detox.
